i paid the police department and the city back. we put this together with a group of volunteerses, the original command center. the wonderful volunteers that exist in san francisco. not people advising you but people coming here doing stuff and they represented the great cross section of san francisco. had two retired school teachers who came to this temporary building everyday for five years, and provided administrative assistance. they were wonderful. one of them was mary louise green. dave ebberly -- you haven't heard that name. he was the guy bouncing around and i found out he was the volunteer driver of the emergency vehicle that we had which was parked in a fire house at the other end of the city and get a call at 2:00 o'clock in the morning and get in that vehicle, and i later learned -- i'm sorry dave. i didn't understand at the time. it was manual transmission

they provide a huge service to the city. the city is one of their biggest clients. i think there is a lot to be said for the idea that language in and of itself is not a panacea; it is not monolithic. there is a difference between saying a restraining order and saying something else, and how you even talk to the victim of trauma is vital. we would like to see more involvement, rather than assuming that they are the experts which is i think how the police have looked at it in the past. language line is the expert on language, and they should teach us. we have a lot to teach interpreters as well about how to effectively communicate with them. one more thing quickly, for emergency protection orders, i am not sure how many people realize this but the judicial council has translated the emergency protection order into five languages. yet getting a copy of that along with the actual english version to the survivor is something that could easily be done by does not happen. i regularly meet with clients who for the first time understand what that emergency protection order

i want to talk about the unsolved murder rate in the city and county of san francisco. it's over 1,000 unsolved murders. i got out of navy when officer mcdonald was killed by a pipe-bomb, which is one unsolved murder going over 30 something years. eric mar, went on record supporting exonerate the killers and sponsored legislation because the murders were so long ago she should be forgiven. i don't think any murder in this country should be forgiven under any circumstances at any time. we all run into a problem with the police department and sometimes we have problems with them and sometimes we have battles with them, but nothing justifies murdering a policemen when he is doing his job and letting the murderers go free and then having legislators at city hall at the board of supervisors run on a mandate that doesn't even mention or have the media talk about it. that that man sponsored legislation that let four murderers off the hook because it was so long ago. i think anybody here or anybody listening tonight should one, thank you warren hinkle for coming out with an art

i also have another item as you know as a city, we have been working with other cities to deal with the issue of homelessness within our veteran population. we have been involved with the hundred days campaign to house veterans in 2012. president obama established a goal to end veteran's homelessness by 2015 which i think is doable and the department of housing and urban development came together to establish the hud slash veterans housing program which, is models after section eight and san francisco has received 500 of the vouchers to date. we have learned that our chronically homeless veterans were having a difficult time finding apartments in the private marked in fact many veterans have had vouchers issued in 1212 and so what we have here is a situation where we have a federal agency, the mayor's office and housing authority and human services agency who have focused to encourage private landlords to provide housing for these veteran and is a few months ago one of those landlords the owner of 2524 mission street came forward to offer to least his 33 stew apartments which are above
